The Brothers Karamazov at the Barbican

Geoff Brown

Who were these bow-tied characters processing on and off the platform like undertakers, thrusting their lusts and agonies in our faces? Making dramatic sense of operas in concert versions isn't always easy. But fathoming a version of Dostoevsky's novel The Brothers Karamazov, its tumbling pages squeezed into a libretto's concertina, is a task to test the gods.

Which brother was that? Mitya, Ivan, Alyosha, Smerdyakov? During the early whirlwind (the scenes were staged on a revolving set in last summer's St Petersburg premiere) it was easy enough for the brain to blur. Easy as well to become woozy over the uneven music of Alexander Smelkov, often cast in a tonal idiom that wouldn't shock 1890.

But by the time Valery Gergiev and his trenchant Mariinsky Theatre forces had ploughed through the gloom into Act II, the gloom wasn't so gloomy after all.

Voices and characterisations brought their own light. Vassily Gorshkov bestowed a suitably dissipated glint upon Feodor, the uncaring Karamazov father, dispatched in the murder that triggers this most philosophical whodunnit. Vladislav Sulimsky's torments as the God-fearing Alyosha shivered the skin. Avgust Amonov's tenor, balding on top, brought an added, appropriate agony to the debauched Mitya.

Elena Nebera's Katerina Ivanovna displayed more individuality than Kristina Kapustinskaya's Grushenka, the opera's Jezebel, but both knew how to shake the rafters. No holding back, either, from Alexander Morozov's Inquisitor (a stunted character in Yuri Dimitrin's libretto), the Mariinsky troops, or the piping Eltham College Trebles, incongruous in their school uniforms.

Even Smelkov's score eventually slipped into some kind of focus. A student buddy of Gergiev, Smelkov's works (five other operas included) have usually stayed put inside Russia. We haven't missed any flaming genius: this Karamazov is the work of a thieving magpie. But he's a clever orchestrator, and his thefts often prove appropriate in context: grotesque Shostakovich here; torrid Tchaikovsky there, sometimes sweetened with Puccini.

The most affecting chunk leant on Russian Orthodox chant, with the eight principal characters meditating on communal guilt over droning double-basses and bells. I'll soon forget the murk in this Karamazov, but that elegy at least will stay in the mind.
